California Gov. Condi Rice?

National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is "very much open" to running for California governor and has "talked specifically" to top GOP insiders about being a candidate, the San Francisco Chronicle reported today.

Rice, former provost of Stanford University, "rates highly with California voters in opinion polls," the newspaper noted. Quite an achievement for a Republican on the Left Coast.

"She's said no on the Senate race [against Barbara Boxer], but is very much open on '06," the Chronicle quoted a Republican insider as saying.

Democrats in the appeasement movement think they have a way to beat Rice. "It really depends on the war ... and that's a big if," said Democrat political consultant Gale Kaufman. "She's completely wrapped her arms around Iraq - and I'm not sure that's as good a resonating message here as it would be somewhere else."

And what about Arnold Schwarzenegger? It's no secret that he'd like to succeed the extraordinarily unpopular Democrat Gov. Gray Davis, who will be lucky to survive the recall campaign being mounted against him.
