Extended Unemployment Benefits

Sen. Fitzgerald Website

In November 2002, Senator Fitzgerald co-authored legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits to thousands of American workers hurt by the recent recession. The measure, which passed the Senate but not the House, called for extending the benefits, set to expire over the holiday season, until April 1, 2003. Nearly 94,000 Illinois workers would have directly benefited from Fitzgerald's bill.

This January, the Senate approved a similar Fitzgerald measure to extend the Temporary Extended Unemployment Insurance Compensation (TEUC) program through the end of May 2003. Fitzgerald's bill allows the almost 800,000 unemployed workers that would have otherwise had their TEUC benefits cut off on December 28, 2002 to receive the full 13 weeks of benefits. It also allows an estimated 1.6 million workers whose standard 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits will expire between December 28, 2002 and May 31, 2003 to apply for the TEUC benefits through the end of May and receive the full 13 weeks of TEUC benefits.
